Religion Practiced in Mass Bay Colony
- They were Puritans and practiced their religion as they pleased. They wanted to change the Church of England by making it more pure. They wanted to remove the ceremony and music. In 1628, a group of Puritans formed the New England Company. The King of England gave them a charter to make a settlement along the Massachusetts Bay.
- The Puritans were allowed to make their own laws. At the center of each Puritan village was a meeting house. At the meeting house, the men of the village met to make the laws and settle the problems of the community. Puritan children were taught how to read, write and do arithmetic. Freedom of Religion was not the law in this colony.
- They did not allow other settlers the same religious freedom. Settlers who did not follow the Puritan ways were not allowed to own land in the colony, and were often sent away.
