Native American Tribes and Interactions with Colonists
- The tribes in this colony are the Wampanoag, Mohegan and Mohican.
- The cooperation between Native Americans and colonists that saved the Plymouth Colony did not last long. Problems between the two groups quickly became serious. As more and more people arrived in Massachusetts, they were encouraged to spread out up and down the coast. There were soon settlers north into what is now Maine and South into what would become Connecticut.
- The communities of Wethersfield, Hartford, and Windsor, were all settled along the river before the first major conflict with the Native Americans. The leaders of the Massachusetts Colony considered the death of Captain John Stone in 1634, a trader of uncertain reputation, as the first strike of the Pequot War.
- Stone was killed by the Western Niantic, who were allies of the Pequot.
